Gowanus
Canal-adjacent warehouse blocks, a climbing gym and shuffleboard crowd, and a rezoning that’s rewriting the neighborhood in slow motion.
Gowanus sits in the wedge between Park Slope and Carroll Gardens and still reads as the warehouse neighborhood both of those were a generation ago. The canal cleanup has accelerated the rezoning, and the blocks north of 3rd Street now host climbing gyms, shuffleboard clubs, axe-throwing venues, and the kind of large-format entertainment spaces Brooklyn doesn't have much of elsewhere. Licensed cannabis retail is emerging here alongside the development wave. Adults 21+ tend to build Gowanus evenings around a specific destination: a concert at Public Records, a meal at one of the warehouse-conversion restaurants, and the subway ride out.
