Cannabis Compliance Disclosure

The Brooklyn Cannabis Club is an independent editorial publication covering the legal cannabis industry in New York State. This page consolidates the compliance framing that appears across our articles into a single reference.

Adults 21+ only

All content on this site is intended for adults aged 21 and older. Accessing our content does not grant any legal authorization to purchase, possess, or consume cannabis in any jurisdiction. If you are under 21, please leave this site.

Licensed retailers only

We cover only New York State-licensed adult-use cannabis retailers, and we actively flag the distinction between licensed and unlicensed operators in our editorial. Unlicensed storefronts remain widespread in New York; purchasing from them exposes you to untested product, legal risk, and zero recourse on quality issues.

Every retailer we cover has an active license registered with the New York Office of Cannabis Management (OCM). Before visiting any dispensary, verify active license status at cannabis.ny.gov via the OCM QR-code portal.

No medical claims

We do not make medical claims about cannabis. Phrases like "treats," "cures," "helps with," "relieves," or "promotes sleep" are avoided in our editorial. Some consumers describe specific experiences with specific products, and we report that as self-described consumer experience, not as medical guidance.

If you're considering cannabis for a health condition, talk to a licensed clinician. The research base on cannabis is developing; individual response varies significantly; and our editorial is not a substitute for medical advice from a qualified practitioner who knows your history.

Public consumption is prohibited

New York state law prohibits cannabis consumption on state-owned land and in public spaces.

This includes state parks, state forests, state beaches, sidewalks, public plazas, and most places where the land is state-owned or state-regulated. Private property (your home, a friend's apartment, private land with the owner's permission) is where consumption is legal for adults 21+. Our editorial does not encourage violations of this statute.

Start low, go slow

Especially for new consumers or anyone new to a specific product format, the "start low, go slow" principle applies:

  • Edibles: New York caps THC at 10mg per serving. Onset can take 30-90 minutes; waiting two hours before redosing is the standard guidance.
  • Inhaled products (flower, pre-rolls, vapes): onset is near-immediate; tapering up is easier than recovering from too much.
  • Tinctures and oils: sublingual onset is typically 15-30 minutes; ingested onset mirrors edibles.

Federal vs. state law

Cannabis remains a Schedule I controlled substance under U.S. federal law. New York State has legalized adult-use cannabis for adults 21+, but the federal framework hasn't changed. This has practical implications:

  • Don't cross state lines with cannabis, even between two legal states. It remains a federal crime.
  • Federal employment and background-check contexts may still treat cannabis use as disqualifying even where state law permits it.
  • Federally-insured banking restricts how licensed retailers process payments (many remain cash-first).

Driving

Every U.S. state prohibits driving under the influence of cannabis. The consequences mirror alcohol DUI — criminal charges, license suspension, insurance effects — and state-level detection thresholds are still evolving. If you've consumed, use a rideshare, public transit, or stay where you are.

Not legal, medical, or financial advice

Our editorial is not a substitute for advice from a licensed attorney, clinician, or financial advisor. Cannabis law, availability, and regulation change quickly. We make best-effort updates but always verify current NY cannabis rules at cannabis.ny.gov before acting on anything you read here.
